Climbing has so many benefits for people and so it gives us a great deal of pleasure to work with community groups on climbing wall projects. Scouts, Community Trusts and Churches are among the many voluntary organisations that have taken on the challenge. We are inspired but never surprised by the energy and perseverance of people in the voluntary sector. Often there is someone with a vision and an enthusiasm that provides the inspiration. But always there is a dedicated group that give freely of their time to ensure the project succeeds. Funding for such projects comes in many forms from traditional funding activities, pub charity applications, local development grants and loans, and the Lotteries Commission. It all takes time but the results can be huge ... a wonderful and exciting local resource. Climbing provides physical, mental and emotional challenges for participants. It teaches good body movement and requires balance and flexibility as well as strength. It stimulates problem solving skills and demands the development and use of good judgment. Climbing requires strong focus and teaches young people that real consequences ensue from their actions. Climbing is a core activity in adventure-based learning and can help youngsters to develop courage, self esteem and persistence. But most of all ... climbing is fun !
