There has been a steady growth in the number of climbing walls in New Zealand schools over the past 5 years. From Traversing and Bouldering Walls in primary and intermediate schools to Top Rope and Lead Climb walls in high schools and tertiary institutions. Climbing can provide physical, mental and emotional challenges for students. It also helps develop superb overall muscle tone. It teaches good body movement and requires balance and flexibility as well as strength. It sharpens sequential problem solving skills and demands the development and use of good judgment. Climbing requires strong focus and teaches students that real consequences ensue from their actions. Climbing enhances physical education programmes and can help students to develop courage, self esteem and persistence. Because safety in climbing depends on team effort it demands that students develop and maintain the highest standards of behaviour and attitude in relation to their climbing partners.
